A Place of
Light & Worship

Masjid Noor Seoul is a student-led prayer space in the heart of Seoul, established by students and professors from Sejong University. What began as a small community effort has grown into a welcoming home for Muslims from Sejong, Konkuk, and Hanyang Universities, as well as residents from the surrounding Gunja area and beyond.

Our mission is simple: to provide a peaceful, clean, and welcoming space for worship, learning, and community โ€” guided by the values of Islam and the spirit of brotherhood. This masjid is kept running through the dedication of students and the generosity of this community.

Description

What to Avoid in Korea

"Do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it in bribery to the rulers so that they might aid you in consuming a portion of the wealth of people in sin, while you know it is unlawful."

โ€” Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:188

"O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful."

โ€” Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:90

"Every flesh that grows from haram will be more deserving of the Fire."

โ€” Musnad Ahmad, 14366 (authenticated)
Important: Many Korean dishes contain pork, alcohol, or non-halal broths. Always ask restaurant staff about ingredients. When in doubt, choose restaurants with visible halal certification.
Category Item Status Notes
Pork Samgyeopsal, Bossam, Galbi, Sundae Haram All pork-based Korean BBQ and dishes
Pork Budae Jjigae (Army Stew) Haram Contains pork, SPAM, and sausages
Alcohol Soju, Makgeolli, Beer, Baeksoju Haram Extremely common in Korean restaurants โ€” often offered by default
Alcohol Cooking wine (์ฒญ์ฃผ, ๋ง›์ˆ ) Haram Frequently used in marinades and sauces
Broths & Soups Most Korean soups (Gomtang, Seolleongtang, Doenjang Jjigae) Caution Typically made with pork or non-halal beef bones
Instant Noodles Most Ramyeon (Shin, Neoguri, Buldak) Caution Many contain pork extract or non-halal flavoring
Street Food Tteokbokki, Odeng (Fishcake), Twigim Caution Broth may be pork-based; fishcake may contain pork
Kimchi Most commercial & restaurant kimchi Caution Often contains jeotgal (salted shrimp/fish paste) โ€” ask if vegan kimchi is available
Sauces & Pastes Doenjang, Gochujang, Ssamjang Caution Check labels โ€” some brands add alcohol during fermentation
Gelatin Products Jellies, gummies, marshmallows, desserts Caution Gelatin is often pork-derived unless labeled halal or vegan
Korean BBQ Non-certified BBQ restaurants Caution Shared grills risk cross-contamination with pork
Snacks & Chips Many flavored chips and crackers Caution Check for pork extract or lard in ingredients
E-Numbers E120, E441, E471, E472 Check E120 = insect-derived; E441 = gelatin; E471/472 = may be animal fat
Seafood Shellfish (oyster, clam, mussel, crab) Check Permissibility varies by school of thought (Hanafi: avoid; Shafi'i: permitted)
Convenience Store Kimbap, sandwiches, onigiri Caution Often contain pork-based ham, tuna with pork additives, or non-halal meat
๐Ÿ” Fast Food & International Chains โ€” Korea
Burger Chains All major international burger franchise outlets in Korea Haram Meat is not halal-certified in Korea. Pork items (bacon burgers, pork patties) are widely sold in the same kitchen. No halal certification exists for any international burger franchise in Korea.
Burger Chains Bacon, sausage & pork-based burger toppings Haram Pork bacon and sausage are standard menu items. Cross-contamination with non-halal meat occurs on shared grills.
Pizza Chains All major pizza franchise outlets in Korea Haram No halal certification. Pepperoni and ham toppings are pork-based. Cheese may contain animal rennet. Dough conditioners may include non-halal additives.
Pizza Chains Pepperoni, ham, pork sausage pizza toppings Haram All standard pepperoni and ham in Korean pizza chains is pork-derived. Even "beef" toppings may be processed in facilities with pork.
Fried Chicken Chains All major fried chicken franchise outlets in Korea Haram No international fried chicken chain in Korea holds halal certification. Chicken is not slaughtered according to Islamic rites. Shared fryer oil may contain pork-derived products.
Fried Chicken Chains Korean domestic fried chicken chains (chimaek culture) Haram Chimaek (์น˜๋งฅ) culture combines fried chicken with beer โ€” none certified halal. Many Korean fried chicken chains use marinades or glazes containing alcohol or pork-based seasonings.
Fried Chicken Chains Garlic butter, honey mustard & special sauce flavours Caution Many specialty sauces in Korean fried chicken chains contain alcohol-based flavouring, pork extract, or non-halal emulsifiers. Always check ingredients.
Sandwich & Sub Chains International sandwich franchise outlets in Korea Haram Meat fillings (turkey, ham, pepperoni, meatballs) are not halal-slaughtered. Pork items are prepared on the same surface as other meats, causing cross-contamination.
Coffee Chains Food items at major coffee franchise chains Caution Sandwiches and wraps often include pork-based ham or non-halal chicken. Some pastries contain gelatin or lard. Drinks are generally safe; food items require caution.
Convenience Store Fast Food Corn dogs, hot dogs, sausage rolls Haram The vast majority of hot dog and sausage products in Korean convenience stores are pork-based. Even "chicken" corn dogs may be processed in facilities handling pork.
Shared Fryer Oil Any fried item from non-certified kitchen Haram Fryer oil used for pork products (pork cutlets, spare ribs, bacon) is reused for other items. This renders the entire fryer haram regardless of the item being fried.
